17. Kaitlyn Alexander
Kaitlyn Alexander first stole my heart on the web series, Carmilla, where they played the nerdy, suspicious, and loving S. LaFontaine who like the actor themselves, identifies as non-binary, an aspect on the LGBTQ+ spectrum often overlooked in media. As much as Carmilla played an amazing role in their life, they knew there were more stories to be told.
Enter Couple-ish.
Their kickstarter page describes it simply, “We are a group of filmmakers, writers, and actors who are passionate about bringing new voices and new representation to LGBTQ+ audiences that don’t usually see it. “Couple-ish” is queer media with a fake couple, but real heart.” The lead character depicts a bisexual, non-binary person.
It’s often said that “people fear what they don’t understand,” and I think a lot of society can’t grasp the idea that some people do not identify as male or female. So we need shows like Carmilla and Couple-ish to bring a non-binary person to screen. We need people to understand. But that’s why we have people like Kaitlyn Alexander, who are bringing a dose of reality back to media.
Season one has 22 episodes on YouTube and a season two is currently in the works!
