19. The Joy of Painting/Bob Ross: Beauty is Everywhere

Now, this is truly a show for someone recovering from a food coma. Bob Ross, he of the scenic landscape paintings and neatly coiffed ginger ‘fro, is so soothing that, okay, you might actually fall asleep.

That’s not the worst thing, however. And, once you wake up a bit and can actually watch what he’s doing, you might even learn a thing or two. Ross, who died in 1995, completed 381 episodes in which he painted live. He was especially fond of landscapes and would often paint “happy little clouds” or trees. The Joy of Painting showcased his signature wet-on-wet technique, in which he would cover a canvas with a layer of oil paint and, instead of waiting a lengthy amount of time for it to dry, would start painting almost immediately.

The intricate landscapes painted by Ross were created in short amounts of time and with relatively simple tools. Ross wanted his work to be accessible to people who wouldn’t be interested in making an investment in expensive art equipment. He also managed to earn over $15 million through branded classes, supplies, and videos. No one said Bob Ross was a dummy, anyway.

He gained pop culture recognition for things as diverse as his painting technique, soothing voice, permed hair, and animals featured on his show. In the current collection available on Netflix, he often talks about his rescued squirrel named Peapod.
