7. The Path

The Path offers an opportunity for some deep thought about faith and personal integrity, not to mention a creepy storyline that centers around a religious cult.

Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad fame, stars as Eddie Lane, a man with a troubled past who has turned to Meyerism, a spiritual cult, to address his troubled inner life. His family, including wife Sarah and children Hawk and Summer, are also part of the religious group, In fact, Sarah was born into a Meyerist family and has become a powerful figure in the cult.

This proves to be a troubling situation for her. Eddie returns from a spiritual retreat with many questions and a deeply shaken faith. Meanwhile, the founder of their faith, Dr. Meyer, is incapacitated and unable to control his followers. Add in Cal Roberts (Hugh Dancy), an ambitious man who is the de facto leader of the movement, and you’re primed for drama.

Reviewers have called this show an “intense psychological study” focusing on family, faith, and loyalty. While this could be a disaster in clumsier hands, the showrunners really know what they’re doing. The writing and direction elevates the source material, and all the central actors deliver fantastic performances.
