12. The Fall
Okay, what if you want to keep the intrigue of Jane the Virgin, but are looking for something a little darker? The Fall might be a good bet.
The Fall is a psychological thriller, initially set in Dublin and tracking the doings of a serial killer. Unlike other shows, you know who the killer is from the very beginning. The man who is tracking single women throughout Ireland’s capital is Paul Spector, played by Jamie Dornan (who you may already known from the 50 Shades of Gray movie). Once local police catch on, they call in Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, played perfectly by Gillian Anderson.
This show is full of menace, from watching Spector interact with his wife and young children, to DSI Gibson’s determined attempts to find and stop the killer. The show is currently in the third season, meaning there’s plenty to watch while you’re digesting. This most recent season is reportedly Dornan’s last, though showrunners have said that they have plans in store for other storylines.
Gillian Anderson is especially good as DSI Gibson. She’s initially cold and reserved, but it soon becomes clear that she’s dedicated to saving people and catching the killer. Even when she interacts directly with Dornan – always chilling – she doesn’t lose her cool.
