6. Wynonna Earp- Wynonna Earp

Wynonna Earp (Melania Scrofano) is a demon fighting, leather wearing, gun-slinging gal who’s cursed with her grandfathers past. The show is often described under the “western feminist” genre (because that’s totally a genre, and I’m totally here for it), with the two main leads (Wynonna and Waverly Earp) being sisters. What makes Wynonna so unique is that she’s not perfect- she’s not the cookie cutter woman you typically see on a TV show. And that’s important to have. Scrofano owes that all to Emily Andras, the showrunner. Andras didn’t just allow Scrofano’s character to be flawed and struggling, she wanted the character to be flawed and struggling. Scrofano describes it perfectly:

When I was in high school, a guy came up to me and was like, ‘you’d be really beautiful if you didn’t joke around so much,’ and that really affected me. And I stopped joking around and I stopped being myself, because I thought I had to be this one thing. And the thing about Wynonna is that she shows girls that you be funny or a f*ck up. And it doesn’t mean that you’re not beautiful, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not strong. We are all of these complicated things, and not a lot of people let you play that. Emil, she embraced that. And was like, ‘you can be vulnerable and still be kickass,’ and that’s my favorite thing about portraying Wynonna.”
