31. Broad City
Let’s kick this off with Broad City– a sitcom starring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. The show was kick started by their web series of the same name that ran from 2009 to 2011. The series was originally based on the two’s friendship and their life in NYC trying to make it big. In 2014, Comedy Central picked up the show and Amy Poehler became one of the executive producers. The show has now been renewed for its fourth and fifth season.
As much as I love the plot behind this show (two Jewish Americans in their mid-twenties flaunting around New York, all while being incredibly funny and careless), how the series actually got started is what fascinates me. This all began as a dream- a small, self-started web series. And it’s now become something so mainstream, sending so many women a message that you can have it all. You can dream big. You can achieve those dreams. You can get to where you want to be. And that’s the most important lesson you can teach.
In an interview with Out Magazine, Glazer notes how happy she is that they have this platform to work with, “It’s a privilege that we get to be this fluid. Also, women’s sexuality—women’s queerdom—is much less threatening to the mainstream than men’s.” So they’re taking this opportunity to talk about it.
