17. Black-ish

This American sitcom couldn’t go unmentioned. Honestly, I can’t even pick out just one character from the show to highlight because they’re all so important- the entire show as a whole is important. Black-ish is a comedy series that tells the story of an upper-middle-class African-American family. The show, created by Kenya Barris, hits so many themes but is mostly covering the issue of cultural identity.

When asked if anyone can enjoy the show by Deadline, Laurence Fishburne replies, “Here’s the thing about our title. Our title is a little bit of a wink. It’s a bit of a joke because, ultimately, if you live in America and you’ve been in America, let’s say, for the last 10, 15, 20 years, you’re probably a little Black-ish anyway. So that’s what’s wonderful about our title, and that’s really what it means. Everybody’s a little Jewish. Everybody’s a little Black-ish, you know?

They’re not trying to exclude anyone. They just want to depict a normal family of African-Americans, who are telling normal stories. He continues, “it’s really about telling stories that are authentic, telling human stories that are rooted, obviously, in either the African-American experience, or my own experience, or experiences that somehow speak to me.”
