Wreckers
This movie follows the story of a young married couple who moves back to their childhood village to start a family. The two buy an idyllic country cottage and start fixing it up, and everything seems perfect. Or at least it does until the husband’s brother pays them a surprise visit. Bandersnatch Cummerbund plays David. Claire Foy from The Crown plays his wife Dawn. And Shaun Evans, whom you may know from Endeavour, plays David’s brother Nick.
Nick’s arrival reignites the long-buried sibling rivalry between the two brothers, and alerts Dawn to the fact that her husband isn’t the perfect man she thought he was. Tensions rise between all three.
Wreckers is occasionally a very slow-moving film, and you will probably get bored in places. It’s a heavily atmospheric character piece that explores the kinds of lies we tell and what we’re willing to do to preserve the fictions in our lives. It also has an ending that can be described as bittersweet at best. (And isn’t exactly…clear cut.) So this movie is maybe not the best thing to go with if you’re looking for comfort or happy time viewing. But the acting is phenomenal from all involved. And as a bonus for my fellow shallow people: Cumberbatch looks great in this. He also cuddles with a baby several times. Basically: Sometimes we have to take our joy where we can find it, and that is A-OK.
