13. Fred Dies

I couldn’t even type this up on my first try because there was a giant tree in my eye.

Fred and George Weasley are one of the few consistently optimistic people in the entire series. As times continue to grow darker and darker, Fred and George remind everyone to laugh and keep on pushing. They’re wonderfully silly, appropriately funny, and unflagging their kindness.

I mean, they didn’t just finish each other’s jokes and sentences. They also dressed similarly and are the reason Harry Potter got the Marauder’s Map.

During the Battle of Hogwarts, they spring into actions right way. Together, Fred and George manage a side of the castle by themselves. While waiting for Voldemort’s attack, George asks, “You okay, Freddie?” Though he says yes, the true answer to that ends up being no.

No, Fred’s not okay. Later, during the first wave of the battle, Fred dies in an explosion. Afterward, his body lays in the Great Hall, where his family mourns over his death. Of course, his mother, Molly, is shaken by his death. But our waterworks start after Ron returns from the Chamber of Secrets and realizes what happened. He falls to the ground and starts to sob over Fred’s body. Loud sobs. Ron’s greatest fear imaginable finally takes shape as he realizes one of his family members has been taken.
