12. R.I.P Dobby the Free Elf

And yet, still not the suckiest moment of the series!

Aberforth Dumbledore learns that Harry and his friends are in trouble, so he sends Dobby to help during the skirmish at the Malfoy Manor. Despite the estrangement between Aberforth and his brother, Abe has a deep fondness for Dobby, and likewise, Harry Potter.

Because of the evolved magic that elves wield, Dobby has no problem breaking into the dungeon at the Malfoy Manor. He kills Peter Pettigrew (finally) and helps the others escape. A battle begins between Bellatrix Lestrange, the Malfoys, and Harry Potter’s crew. To trigger a ceasefire, Bellatrix holds her silver knife to Hermione’s throat and tells everyone to stop. Admittedly, she would’ve won the battle, except that Dobby was on top of the chandelier. He unscrews the fixture and it comes crashing down over Bellatrix’s head.

The opportunity to escape presents itself as everyone apparates away. Bellatrix’s final hail mary is to throw her dagger at them. It apparates, too.

On the beach at Shell Cottage, Harry asks if everyone’s okay as Dobby calls his name, alerting Harry that he’s been stabbed. Harry holds Dobby in his arms as he takes his last breath.

Afterward, he digs Dobby’s grave by hand and his tombstone reads, “Here lies Dobby, a free elf.”
