43. Young Anakin Skywalker

When we meet young Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine in TPM, he dresses like this. The only thing he loses between Tatooine and this scene, where Mace Windu tests his Force sensitivity, is a necklace. It seems like he’s already abandoning his attachment to his mother.

You’ll notice here the same style of look as Luke sports in ANH and later Rey in TFA. Again, it’s a very simple outfit, designed to protect from the wind and sand of Tatooine. The Luke references are also entirely intentional (Dressing a Galaxy 3).

However, the fabric looks dirtier and as though it isn’t as high a quality as Luke’s or even Rey’s. Remember, Anakin starts off as a slave to Watto, and though he and his mother have a house of their own, it doesn’t seem like they have very much beyond that. A closer look at Shmi Skywalker’s outfit shows that they effectively wear the same top, down to the belt at the waist, just in different colors. (Shmi also has a patterned belt compared to her son’s leather.)

Add in a beat-up old helmet, with just two lenses to protect his eyes instead of a full visor, and you have his Podrace outfit.

Notably, his Padawan outfit shares a similar palette, just rendered in far finer fabrics, down to leather boots instead of the suede ones he has on Tatooine, per Dressing a Galaxy.
