16. Darth Maul

Darth Maul is so cool that they brought him back for Star Wars Rebels, because when you design such a character, it is probably a waste to have him in just one movie.

Anyway, Maul has, of course, the standard issue Sith hood and all-black ensemble. However, Maul’s outfit actually looks best in motion. According to Dressing a Galaxy, it consists of “multiple shoulder-to-ankle length circular pieces”, which lay fairly flat when Maul stands still but then whirl out in the air when he fights, evoking the idea of a shuriken flying (35).

That’s right: Darth Maul is supposed to look like a throwing star, and you probably still think he looks awesome. Here’s the Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon fight. We rest our case.

Interestingly, the idea of multiple panels resurfaces for another dark Force user in TFA — Kylo Ren has very long robes as well that flare out when he fights Rey.

To talk briefly about Darth Maul’s facial design, concept designer Iain McCaig effectively drew his worst nightmare on the request of George Lucas himself, then adapted it partially and ended up with what he describes as a Rorschach pattern on the character’s face.

So, in a way, you can still see someone’s worst nightmare in Darth Maul’s face. That someone may just be you instead.
