17. Leia on Hoth

Speaking of people who wear white, here’s Leia’s first pair of action pants. When discussing Padmé’s Geonosis outfit, we mentioned that this look probably served as inspiration, although AOTC eschews a jumpsuit.

We’ve already discussed the patch and vest visually tying her to Luke’s Hoth wear, but the entire ensemble also looks like a puffier Leia-style take (all white!) on what Han generally wears, too. Now, it’s practical as well, but somehow I think the idea was there to have that visual cue, especially since a significant portion of TESB is dedicated to Leia and Han’s romance.

Perhaps that’s why the Hoth hairstyle gets featured on one of the more well-known posters for TESB alongside Han’s Hoth outfit. (After all, their first on-screen kiss happens while she has this costume on.)

Speaking of her hairdo, this is again a practical look, with the usual deployment of braids to help secure everything.

She also switches back into the jumpsuit, sans vest, for the “I love you” / “I know” scene, albeit while sporting the Cloud City hairstyle with the looped braids.

Interestingly, you can spot a very similar hairstyle in ROTJ, since Leia participates in the ground operation on the forest moon of Endor. She keeps the ties from the Ewok village, though.
