29. Luke on Bespin

Get all of your “That’s not true, that’s impossible!” and loud screams of “No!” out of the way now, please.

Done? Okay, let’s talk about the evolution of Luke Skywalker from when we first meet him in ANH. By necessity, we’ll also talk a bit about his Dagobah outfit. They are not the same, according to Dressing a Galaxy, but they certainly look quite similar. (We actually first spot Luke’s Bespin jacket when he convinces Yoda to train him.)

Simply put, where did all those natural and light colors go? In TESB, Luke has lost some of his farm-boy demeanor. He’ll still believe the best in people, and he’ll do anything to save his friends, but he’s also starting to encounter the Dark Side of the Force in an up close and personal sort of way. It starts with the vision in the tree, where he believes he’s dueling Darth Vader. Then, he actually meets the dark lord face to face on Bespin.

As for his Dagobah training outfit, it evokes a boot camp feel. Yoda is here to whip Luke into proper Jedi shape!

In short, there are shades of gray and complexities to Luke now that we didn’t really see when he was staring off into the double sunset on Tatooine. He’s not just a hotshot pilot who came out of nowhere, either.
