32. Padmé on Tatooine

Padmé proves quite adept at disguising herself throughout TPM, and her peasant’s outfit on Tatooine isn’t an exception by any stretch of the word. The outfit easily calls to Anakin’s and Shmi’s in terms of cut and fabric type, though Padmé has two major differences.

First, she’s wearing blue, not just the blue-gray Shmi has in her outfit. Remember, here she’s Padmé, not Queen Amidala and not just a handmaiden, and she’ll pick up more blue in her wardrobe as we see more of her as opposed to the queen of Naboo we first meet in TPM.

Second, she actually has dark leggings, not a skirt. (This would be the first of Natalie Portman’s probably-not contractually-obligated pants outfits.) They pick up the darker tones that Amidala usually wears, and at this point, neither the viewer nor the characters know about the switcharoo. This may be just a coincidence, but the idea has some merit to it, we think.

To talk a bit about her hairstyle here, first and most obviously: she’s letting her hair down, and is much freer to speak than she is even when she’s got her handmaiden’s cloak on. However, she keeps some braids and buns, again separating her from Shmi, who has a relatively simple chignon-influenced hairstyle.
