The Edge of Seventeen (November 18th)
Synopsis: Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) is a socially awkward high-school junior who finds herself more of an outcast than ever when her best friend starts dating her brother.
The Edge of Seventeen is being compared to John Hughes films like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, which is the only reason I need to see it. Director Kelly Fremon Craig’s coming-of-age film includes an impressive cast led by teen star Hailee Steinfeld. Trailers are presenting it as a fun, sweet movie with a deliciously edgy streak. Critical consensus since its festival premiere has been universally positive – outside of a few male critics, who shall remain nameless, being less than impressed.
The film’s frank sense of humor is receiving much of the acclaim and I’m all for more nasty women in the world! The teen girl film market hasn’t seen much content that isn’t already connected to a YA franchise. It’s also great to note this is the second female-directed film out in the month of November! The film currently boasts a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Hopefully The Edge of Seventeen’s success will allow for more movies about young girls that don’t involve sparkly vampires or a dystopian future.
