The Love Witch (November 11th)

Synopsis: Elaine (Samantha Robinson) is a beautiful witch desperate for love. But her magic works a bit too well, leaving her with the right guy but a fear that will drive her to the edge of sanity.

Halloween might be over, but there’s no reason you still can’t enjoy a witch or two. Anna Biller’s The Love Witch is the independent film I’ve been hearing about all year. Biller’s ode to 1960s melodramas of the Russ Meyer variety has one of the most sumptuous color palettes out there and Samantha Robinson is beauty incarnate. Seriously, the trailer is utterly gorgeous and worth a watch itself.

Everything in The Love Witch looks expertly composed, and as someone who follows Biller on Twitter it’s evident she’s a classic film fan who’s done her homework. (I’m a soft touch for anyone who provides a lot for TCM.) This has been a great year for watching new female directors come into their own, and it’s a no-brainer that Biller is one of the year’s promising talents. The critical consensus on The Love Witch is universally positive, with the film currently holding a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’re a fan of classic cinema or just want to take in some gorgeous cinematography, The Love Witch needs to be on your radar.
