The Fall
Set in modern day Belfast, The Fall is a psychological murder mystery pitting Scotland Yard detective Stella Gibson against a terrifying serial killer who is actively stalking young women. The twist? We, the viewers, know who the killer is from the very beginning. His name is Paul Spector. In fact, we watch him live his regular life with his family as Gibson investigates the case. The suspenseful cat-and-mouse between them becomes almost unbearably tense at points, as near-misses abound on both sides. You may actually yell at the television at several points.
Gillian Anderson stars as DSI Gibson, and her character is pretty much everything. Just brilliant, icy, take-no-crap perfection. She’s commanding, unapologetically feminist, great at her job and completely at ease in her own skin. Stella, in short, is amazing, and there should be more characters like this on television, immediately. Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan plays Spector, and walks a fine line between playing a decent family man and who happens to have a secret life murdering women. Dornan is terrifying, not only because Paul is a clear monster, but because he looks like a guy that you could know. That you might already know.
