Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo de Rivera, a Mexican painter known for her self-portraits, has been a feminist icon for her expression of the female experience and female form. Some claim her to be the most famous Mexican artist on the contemporary art scene. She captured her physical disabilities, which were a result of an accident when she was eighteen. She also expressed her marriage to Diego Rivera, and the fact that they were both unfaithful to one another.

"“I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.”"

Her work has been seen across the world and continues to act as a beacon for artists and creators. Kahlo’s art depicts everything from conception, pregnancy, abortion, and gender roles. And it’s typically in a blunt and unmasked manner. Her attempt to deface politics, and put a more personal side to it was the soul of her artwork. She painted her own reality and held nothing back.

She was known to wear a rainbow of color and extravagant jewelry. And always with flowers lining her hair.
