31 Times Gilmore Girls Had the Best Representation of Female Friendship
31. Rory’s First Kiss
Season 1, Episode 7 “Kiss and Tell”
Rory and Dean(Jared Padalecki) are in the very early, puppy love stages of their relationship when he surprises her with a kiss in Doose’s Market. She then proceeds to shoplift and run straight to Lane’s house to tell her friend the news. And Lane is just as excited to hear about the kiss as Rory is to tell her about it. This is ultimate girl friendship.
It would have been easy to turn Lane into a jealous character. Even though she has a strict mother who severely limits her romantic opportunities, Lane doesn’t have any resentment towards her friend. She is genuinely happy for Rory and even takes it upon herself to find out more information about Dean since Rory goes to another school.
Even though Rory is relatively naive, Lane is even more so. She looks to Rory for advice about things like dating and boys, because unlike Rory she doesn’t have a mother figure where talking about these kinds of things is considered appropriate. Rory never makes her feel bad for not being on the same level, she always admits that she doesn’t really know what she is doing either. This level of honesty and openness is essential in their friendship, as well as their ability to share in each other’s excitement.
