15. Lorelai & Sookie Survive Their First Fight About the Inn

Season 2, Episode 8 “The Ins & Outs of Inns”

Lorelai and Sookie opening up their own inn is a theme throughout many seasons of Gilmore Girls. While they have talked about the idea for a while the second it starts becoming a reality Lorelai freaks out and picks a fight with her best friend. She is afraid Sookie won’t be reliable and will leave all of the actual running of the business to her. Sookie is mad at Lorelai for snapping at her rather than talking about what is really wrong.

Opening a new business is stressful. Lorelai and Sookie can’t agree on everything all the time. Their fights are a natural outcome of the pressure and fear that comes with making such a life altering decision. The most important thing is that they don’t let this argument stop them. They both apologize and move on.

Running a business is hard work and friendship just as much. It is nice to see them entering into a business arrangement as equals, especially because Lorelai has the habit of bullying Sookie around. It is nice to see Sookie finally standing up for herself and Lorelai willing to admit she is wrong. As a wise man once said, “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.” This is the first of many challenges Lorelai and Sookie will face on the road to making their dream come true but if they can survive the early fights then they can survive anything.
