19. Emily Asks Lorelai for Dating Advice

Season 5, Episode 9 “Emily Says ‘Hello'”

Richard and Emily are separated. Which is weird and sad because they have always been Richard and Emily. What’s even stranger is that Emily wants to start dating again. And she asks Lorelai to help her get started. Lorelai is not thrilled by the prospect of helping her mother date someone who is not her father. She helps anyway when she sees how desperate for advice and lonely Emily appears.

Lorelai gives her mother tips on how to approach men (saying “hello” is not too forward) and on what to wear. It is one of the few moments Lorelai chooses to be supportive rather than her snarky. It is a hard time for both of them, but Lorelai is able to put aside her own feelings and put her mother first.

This is an important moment in their relationship. Emily is allowing herself to be vulnerable around her daughter. And Lorelai in turn is providing support even though she doesn’t necessarily agree with her mother’s decision. She listens to her mother’s fears about her date and comforts her. She does not make light of the situation. In this moment Lorelai is a doing what any good friend (and wingwoman) would do- she is putting her own feelings aside and helping Emily land a date.
