20. Mrs. Kim Shares Her Sake

Season 6, Episode 11 “The Perfect Dress”

Lane and Zack have broken up and Lane is taking out her sadness on everyone, including the customers at her mother’s store. She is obviously upset and not hiding it very well. Instead of Rory helping her get over her broken heart this time, it is her mother who steps in. She sits Lane down one day after work and then reveals a hidden bottle of sake. And then she proceeds to share the alcohol with Lane!

This is a side of Mrs. Kim we’ve never seen before. She hasn’t changed completely though. “Lane, it’s been six weeks since you came home. You’ve grieved and now we move on,” she tells her in typical Mrs. Kim fashion. She is stern, but there is no malice behind her words. She wants Lane to be happy again and is saying as much in her own way.

Mrs. Kim and Lane do not have the same close relationship as Lorelai and Rory, but she loves her daughter all the same. Not all women are the warm and fuzzy type. Some people have trouble expressing their feelings or their showing affection. It is nice to have a small moment like this one to show the different kinds of relationships between mothers and daughters. Showing someone you care can be as simple as sharing a glass and acknowledging someone’s sadness.
