21. Rory Makes New Friends at Yale

Season 7, Episode 4 “‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvelous” & Season 7, Episode 7 “French Twist”

Rory has some friends at Yale, but they are mostly her roommates and Paris. She doesn’t seem to have many girlfriends in general outside of Paris, Lane, and her mother which is why Lucy (Krysten Ritter) and Olivia (Michelle Ongkingco) are a welcome addition. Rory meets them at an art show she is covering for the Yale Daily News and the three instantly hit it off.

Lucy, Olivia, and Rory aren’t lifelong besties. They are the kind of friends you spend a fun weekend with dying your hair and pretending to be in an all girl band. Rory and Olivia are creative, free spirits. They are very different from Rory and the kind of people she usually hangs out with like the type A Paris. They are the kind of friends who help her let loose and get out of her comfort zone.

Lucy and Olivia are also the ones Rory turns to with her fears about graduation. Rory isn’t sure if she should pursue a career as a journalist or go to grad school. She can’t confide in Paris because Paris has her life all  planned out and wouldn’t understand. Lucy and Olivia get it because they are lost in similar ways. It comforts Rory to know she is not completely alone. These shared fears of the future make Lucy and Olivia good friends to have during a time of need. They are the kind of women who will cry with you one minute and then help cheer you up the next. Everyone needs friends like that.
