22. Rory Helps Lane Rebel

Season 3, Episode 4 “One’s Got Class and the Other One Dyes”

Lane has always had to hide her “alternative” lifestyle from her mother and Rory has always been there to help her. Whether it is hiding CDs or supplying Lane with junk food and butterfly hair clips, Rory would never let her friend suffer. In season three Rory helps Lane achieve the ultimate rebellion, dying her hair purple. Lane is looking for a way to show her mother she is no longer willing to live under her strict rules and she figures the best way to do this is with an in-your-face hair color. Until her mother comes home and she freaks out and changes her mind.

Rory only tries to convince Lane to keep her radical new style for a second, once she sees the distress on her friend’s face she jumps to fix the problem. Rory never judges Lane or tries to push unreasonable relationship expectations on her. She understands that Lane will never be the kind of friend who can go to a Bangles concert on a school night or on double dates with non-Korean boys. Rory respects these boundaries because she knows how important family is regardless of the fact that Lane and her mother are not as close as she and Lorelai.
