Absolutely Fabulous

Jennifer Saunders stars as Edina Monsoon, a hard-drinking, drug-abusing, fashion-loving PR agent who’s desperately obsessed with the idea of staying young, hip and “relevant”. She’s best friends with a woman named Patsy Stone (played by the incredibly perfect Joanna Lumley), a magazine editor who smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish. The two women have various outrageous adventures through the worlds of fashion and publishing – constantly throwing parties, sampling new recreational substances, and trying to lose weight.

This show has had a particularly erratic production schedule over the years. As a result, it’s been broadcast in variously sized at different points from 1992 to 2012. It’s possible that you’ve seen this in bits and pieces over the years. But it’s definitely worth your time to watch the full run. Plus, despite the fits and starts-style development of the series, it holds up wonderfully well. Some of the earliest episodes are still some of the very funniest. You may just have to ignore some of the weird supposedly “high fashion” clothes.

Absolutely Fabulous is actually the show that introduced me to British comedy – and hooked me it for life. (No joke, I had a group of friends in college and we all named our cars after AbFab characters. Mine was Edina.) You will either love or hate this show – but if you love it, it will stay with you forever, sweetie darling.
