Catastrophe

Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney star in this romantic comedy series that is incredibly, wonderfully free of any sort of gooey sentimentality. Catastrophe follows the story of Rob and Sharon, a couple who have a brief affair while he is in London on business. Sharon gets pregnant, Rob moves to England and the two decide to try and make their relationship work.

Despite the rather unconventional start to Rob and Sharon’s love story, Catastrophe is one of the absolute best series about relationships on TV right now. The show is laugh-out-loud funny, and features two flawed, often unlikable, always relatable people trying to figure out how to navigate a relationship. It tackles the natural realities of romance, dating, sex, friendship and career issues in extremely realistic ways. Sometimes things are messy. Sometimes things are difficult. People make mistakes and poor choices, but still wake up the next day to try and get it right again.

Catastrophe basically flouts almost every trope of the rom-com genre and it’s a better show for it. There’s no real question of will they or won’t they, as Rob and Sharon are basically together from the show’s beginning. Their lives aren’t perfect. They’re frequently terrible people, and terrible partners – and later, terrible parents. But they’re also loving and hopeful and loyal, and willing to forgive each other when they fail. It’s a show that feels like real life. And it manages to be hysterically funny, without the addition of the wacky hijinks that show’s like this often include.

Bonus: Carrie Fisher is a guest star!
