Tom Hollander stars as Reverend Adam Smallbone, a Church of England vicar who gets promoted from a small rural parish to the inner-city world of East London. He has no experience with this kind of environment, and it shows. Smallbone faces many new challenges as he struggles to serve his new community which includes everyone from true believers to the homeless to those who just want to use the church to get their kids into a better school.
Olivia Coleman co-stars as Smallbone’s supportive wife Alex, who does her best to support him, but has her own career to worry about. A successful solicitor with her own interests and opinions, she’s no one’s idea of traditional vicar’s wife. She is also awesome. There are several other rotating regulars who appear frequently as members of Smallbone’s parish.
Rev is a fairly standard fish-out-of-water style sitcom, but it really doubles down on the poignant commentary in addition to the humor. Humanity, morality and religion are frequent topics of discussion. Which makes sense, given that this is a show about a vicar, but it makes this comedy a bit more earnest than some other entries on this list.
