45. Gareth Dies

Nobody liked Gareth (Andrew J. West). I certainly didn’t. He was the leader of Terminus and served as the main antagonist in the first half of Season 5. I was waiting for the episode the group got vengeance on him, and when it finally happened, it was something none of us expected.

The Terminus survivors are ambushed at the church by Rick’s group. Gareth expects Rick to shoot him, as he has a clear shot, but Rick didn’t. Gareth asks him why, and Rick explains he didn’t want to waste the bullets. Gareth pleads for his life, promising that they’ll never cross paths again. That’s funny…

Rick pulls out his machete, and literally hacks Gareth to death. We’ve seen a lot of rage come from Rick, stemming from all he’s been through. This, however, pushed it over the edge. The amount of pure anger, hatred, and rage in this scene is nothing short of terrifying. Rick unleashes on Gareth, while Morgan, Michonne, Maggie, and others watch.

Let’s be honest. If someone tried to slit the throats of all your friends to use them as meat though, wouldn’t you want to hack the guy to death? Can you blame Rick at this point?
