This family had lived most of the apocalypse behind the walls of Alexandria. Especially Jessie, who can’t understand the depth of what is happening in the world when he has rarely seen it. The first time his house was attacked, he hid upstairs and refused to set into the reality of trauma and loss. So when he’s being pulled through a hoard of zombies, he loses it, bringing his mother down with him. Ron saw this an opportunity to get his revenge on Rick. He grabs his gun and points it at Rick. Before he can shoot, Michonne kills Ron.

In a way, I do believe that none of the three could’ve lived without the others, so I think it had to happen like this. But it hurts seeing what it did to Rick. He was finally letting his guard down with someone other than Lori, and that was changing him. For the worse or the better, we’ll never know.
