36. Hilltop

The introduction of the Hilltop to The Walking Dead changed the game for a lot of the characters. It set us up for new enemies, new alliances, and new leadership. It all begins when Daryl and Rick come across Jesus (Tom Payne), the most mysterious character in this show’s history. We couldn’t tell if he was friend or foe at first. But he’s proving to be more friend than foe.

The leader of Hilltop, Gregory (Xander Berkeley), made a deal with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviors that half of their resources go to them for the price of Negan not attacking them and overrunning Hilltop. While Jesus, their scouter, was out looking for supplies, he ran into Rick and Daryl. He convinces them and a few others to come back to Hilltop, as he wants to create a merger. Hilltop needs guns and ammo, and Alexandria needs food. This where you see Maggie developing a leadership role, as she is the one who talks to Gregory, not Rick. They strike up the deal.

However, one of their members comes back and stabs Gregory. Rick kills the man, causing some tension between them and Hilltop. But in the end, they all agree that the real enemies they face are the Saviors.
