#9: The Sexy Getting Ready Song

This song perfectly parodies the countless scenes in movies and TV wherein women are shown getting ready to go out as though it’s a glamorous, filtered, photoshopped experience. In reality, there’s a lot of gross stuff happening, and it’s annoying to do most of what we’re “supposed to” do, and if we’re going it “right,” we’re almost too tired to go out by the time we’re actually ready to go out. And as it comes so early in the series, this song expertly sets the tone we quickly and happily grow accustomed to. Astute observation, absurdity, believable characters in unbelievable situations, immeasurable quirk, and a tiny bit of lovable vulgarity are what make this song (and the show) so easy to enjoy. The “Sexy Getting Ready Song” (explicit version below) seemingly takes place within the polished and sexy world of a music video; we start off by getting an intimate glimpse into Rebecca’s routine. But even the sultry music and forced sex appeal of the video girls, including Rebecca, can’t distract us from the true, bloody horrors of reality. As often happens in R&B videos, a rap star steps in to spit his lazily objectifying verse, but even he stops himself once he sees that “women getting ready” and “seduction” do not belong in the same fantasy. His music video illusions are shattered, his ways are changed, and we realize how hilarious it is that we’ve upheld certain beauty ideals when we know that they’re impossible. And gross. And not remotely worth it. Hands in for a “Sexy Staying In Bed In Ripped Pajamas All Night” song next season!

Lyric highlight:

“This is how you get ready? This is horrifying, like a scary movie or something. Like some nasty-ass patriarchal bulls***.”
