#5: “I Give Good Parent”
This song brilliantly transforms a Thanksgiving dinner spent with a partner’s family from a total anxiety-producing nightmare into a badass brag-fest. Rebecca, having been invited to Josh’s family’s Thanksgiving celebration thanks to some light Paula-helmed trickery, makes it her duty to show his parents what they’re missing. In the least girl-on-girl-fight-y way possible, Rebecca tactfully upstages Josh’s current girlfriend, Valencia, and recounts her victories in song…not so tactfully. The explicit version, obviously not aired but available on the soundtrack and on Rachel Bloom’s YouTube page, has us witnessing Rebecca’s typical parent-pleasing behavior accompanied by her increasingly vulgar commentary. There is some Sondheim-level lyric-weaving at work here, and matched with the rap video aesthetic and the hilariously relatable scenario, it’s an all-around crowd-pleaser. Just maybe think twice about bringing this one out at the dinner table this holiday season.
