14. Orange is the New Black- Piper Chapman

I have to commend Orange is the New Black for it’s stellar inclusion of, not only the display of female sexuality, but the conversation surrounding it. What was once a taboo to talk about is now becoming a mainstream norm, and I couldn’t be happier.

This show is written by women, directed by women, and primarily, casted with women. A comedy-drama released by Netflix in 2013, it’s depicting the ins and outs of the women living in the Litchfield Penitentiary and it has stolen fans hearts across the globe.

Their lead character can’t go unmentioned. Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), happily married to her husband, is sentenced to 15 months in prison for a crime committed years ago. Her and ex-girlfriend, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), are both convicted of smuggling drugs and drug money across the border. They end up in the same prison and need to figure out how this is going to work out.

This relationship is important because it touches upon the dynamic of bisexuality, and how fluid that can be. Not everybody likes Piper, or Alex, or their dynamic, in general, but everyone should appreciate it and the issues Orange is the New Black is attempting to hit.
