How to Get Away with Murder S3E2 Recap: What is Love?

We found out the fate of one person on How to Get Away with Murder tonight.

Warning: this post contains spoilers for the September 29 episode of How to Get Away with Murder.

We start off in the flash-forward. Annalise, in tears, tells the cops that she was at the clinic, but she has enough left in her to be mad about getting asked for an alibi. Back in September, Nate asks her if she had some sexy dreams last night. She sends him off into the shower and proceeds to pull her little burner phone out of its hiding place. When she calls the PI, Frank picks up instead, and he tells her said PI is dead.

We even get to hear a neck snap! How lovely.

Healthy Relationships Everywhere, Folks

On her real phone, Annalise gets a call from the university president’s office. Turns out they’ve started an investigation into the posters. (We covet her new coat, by the way. Very fall.) After the meeting, she runs into Wes and offers to let him live with her.

Wes rightly points out his girlfriend, and she tells him to forget it all and go study. Can anyone else say “awkward”?

At the Keating Law Offices, Laurel walks in on Bonnie while the locks get changed. They discuss the Mahoney case, and Laurel asks about Frank, once again displaying very healthy behavior. Up in her bedroom, Annalise destroys her burner phone.

We cut to Frank getting out of a crashed car. In the trunk, he has the PI’s body, and he then makes it look as if said PI were driving before lighting the car aflame. Because this is TV, the car then explodes.

Case of the Week

In the Apartment Where Love Has Died, Connor and Oliver awkwardly talk. In class, Connor tells everyone about his breakup. Everyone says he must have cheated. Asher gets super gross about a girlfriend who may or may not exist. (Or he’s just referring to Michaela.)

Our case of the week: Irene Crowley, accused of killing her husband, Rodney. Before Annalise gets into the details, Oliver shows up and introduces himself as the clinic’s tech expert. Interlude then over, we then find out Irene has been in prison for 30-plus years. Annalise asks for a parole strategy, giving each of her students one minute with Irene.

Everyone visits with Irene. Asher’s strategy ranks as the most terrible, because it boils down to “I’m a white guy, so pick me.” Irene chooses Connor, even though he acts like he doesn’t want the case.

On campus, Annalise tells Wes she offered to let him move in because she’s lonely. We cut to her visiting Nate’s apartment, and she tells him she needs help finding Frank. She says she’s worried about Frank coming back, since he has the potential to be dangerous. A knock sounds: it’s a document courier.

Back in Wes’ apartment, Meggie says Annalise could be in a lot of danger. He quickly changes the topic to dessert, which admittedly does look gross. He feeds her a bite, and then they start making out.

Nobody Cares About Connor’s Case (Except Connor)

Connor divides everyone into teams. Michaela and Asher make up team 1, and they need to find witnesses. He says some more nasty stuff, including about “Little Asher.” He has seriously devolved into a 12-year-old this episode.

Next up: dealing with Irene’s sister. Laurel and Wes get sent to work her over. She does not give in. Connor tries to send Simon Drake and Natalie to prison, though Annalise doesn’t let him get away with it. In the visiting room, he and Irene talk about strategies. She says she’d rather be hit than grovel. When he comes back to the office, the rest of the Keating 5 are focusing on relationships, Oliver, and definitely not Connor’s case.

Meanwhile, Bonnie tells Annalise that Laurel’s been calling Frank, which does not sit well with Annalise. Channeling her inner Frank, Bonnie says she’ll take care of it all.

Really, Asher?

During the parole hearing, Connor does not do great. Since his initial attempts to prove Irene’s abuse don’t work very well, he pulls an impassioned speech out of nowhere. (Ross Poldark would be proud.)

“I don’t have the time to strip you of all your terrible white habits…” – Michaela

In the hallway, Annalise tells him to calm down and call the others for help before walking out. Asher and Michaela are too busy to answer. She tells him they aren’t a couple but accepts another “double” from him anyway.

According to Nate, Frank is in Wichita. Meanwhile, Wes and Laurel continue their strange we-broke-up behavior towards each other.

In a meeting with Irene, Connor tells her she needs to explain what happened and why. He confesses that he has killed someone before and that people can tell he’s hiding something.

Unbeknownst to him but beknownst to us, Annalise hears every single word. However, she does not let him get away with it for long and tells him to keep his mouth shut.

Asher and Michaela have another spat. He says they’re the same because of the bad things they’ve now done. She does not have a very good answer for that.

How (Not) to Get Away with Silly Decisions

Back in the parole hearing, Irene finally starts talking. She planned the murder, because she didn’t want to be beaten anymore.

Although Connor and Oliver are broken up, they talk on the phone to distract Connor. Meanwhile, in the ladies’ room, Annalise looms menacingly over Rodney’s sister. She suspects Rodney abused her, too. Because she doesn’t testify thanks to Annalise, the board grants Irene her parole.

Annalise meets with the university board. Because of the smear campaign getting too much attention, they say they’ll suspend her. She points out that suspension makes approximately no sense and threatens a lawsuit. Nothing will keep her from teaching her students. That said, she storms out.

Love Remains Dead

In the Broken Hearts apartment, Oliver is preparing a celebratory dinner. Connor kisses him, which is very confusing all around, then gets his second passionate speech of the episode. Unfortunately, Oliver does not fall for it and starts crying, saying he wants space for himself. So Connor goes to pack.

Bonnie and Laurel are drinking and playing pool in a bar. In the conversation, Bonnie drops the episode title: “There are worse things than murder”. She’s talking about Frank — and herself. Speaking of Frank, Nate tells Annalise that Frank could actually be anywhere at all because of an IP spoofer.

Connor turns up at Michaela’s door in tears. He then promptly finds out about her and Asher. Wes then turns up at Annalise’s door with pizza. While Wes talks, Annalise eyes him pretty strangely.

Laurel leaves another terrible voicemail for Frank, but this time, Annalise and Bonnie are behind it, and then go say they’ll see Laurel’s father.

2 months later, we see that Oliver survives. She passes him a phone and tells him to wipe it clean before the cops slap handcuffs on her.

Next week, the Keating 5 will take a field trip to Atlantic City, and the hunt for Frank continues.

How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays on ABC.
