Poldark: 3 Questions for Episode 2
What will happen during the next installment of Poldark?
Warning: this post contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of Poldark, available to stream on PBS’ website. You could just read our recap, though. This post does not, however, discuss the source novels in any way.
To borrow from Demelza: Judas! What an episode. We had shirtless mining, an impassioned speech, a not-guilty verdict, and five or six other things we shan’t list here. Poldark came to play this season. However, even though some cliffhangers neatly wrapped themselves up, other events began to play out. Here are our three questions for episode 2 and beyond.

1. How long will it take Caroline to dump Unwin?
So far on Poldark, we have not had many ladies who are equipped with an excellent side-eye. Heiress Caroline Penvenen sports a marvelous aside glance, an adorably well placed pug, a talent for saying hilariously direct (and thus inappropriate) things, and a sorta-kinda intended in Unwin Trevaunance, which stands out as an unfortunate name.
Caroline has pretty clearly given up on Unwin ever capturing her interest if her expressions while he talks are any indication. Doctor Enys made his case by treating Horace. Finally, the poop-throwing incident after the vote probably sealed the deal.
We won’t say it will only take 10 minutes of episode 2, but we’re saying it might only take 10 minutes.
2. How will Ross respond to Demelza’s news?
At this point, it appears that the only two people who know Demelza is pregnant again are Demelza herself and Elizabeth. It seemed that Demelza was about to spill the beans at the end of the premiere, but then she held back because Ross opened his mouth.
(Ross Poldark: gorgeous, strong-willed, and sometimes so very, very bad at being perceptive.)
He does have a point, though: they can’t really describe the finances of their side of the Poldark family as particularly healthy in this point in time. That makes parenting far more difficult.
Might the mentioning of Wheal Grace during the will-writing scene be a note of foreshadowing that will pay off later in the season? And will he put on a brave face when he finds out he’s going to be a father again?
3. Will Francis break down again?
Poor Francis. Sure, he has done some mind-bendingly silly things, with not reconciling with Verity and losing his mine probably near the top of the list. However, it does have to sting to realize that your cousin is more popular than you and probably always will be. (That, and you’re in debt up to your eyeballs with a guy whom you mouthed off to. Choices, Francis. Choices.)
Although his suicide attempt fails in the season premiere, the way he speaks to Enys the morning after suggests that this will likely stay an issue. With next week’s preview showing that Ross and Elizabeth may grow close again, Francis will likely have a tough time dealing with it all.

Oh, yes, and “What will Warleggan do this time to try and ruin Ross?” remains a salient question, as always. This time, however, you can follow up with, “How long will it take him to try and earn brownie points with Elizabeth again?”
Poldark airs Sundays on PBS.
