Fans have been flocking to Pottermore’s new Patronus quiz, but not all have been pleased with their results. Reddit breaks down all the possibilities.

More from Harry Potter

Perhaps as early as Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry first casts his stag, Harry Potter fans have speculated upon their own Patronus. Internet quizzes have been popping up in attempts to put a rest to that wonder. But often these quizzes were a sort of clickbait self-fulfilling prophecy. After all, questions like “What’s your favorite animal?” don’t necessarily speak to the innermost depths of your soul. In cases such as these, you practically chose your own Patronus.

The recent release of J.K. Rowling’s official Patronus quiz put an end to that. The newest Pottermore quiz might not be the real thing, but it’s the closest we Muggles and No-Majs are going to get to the actual charm. Naturally, fans were thrilled… up until they got their results, anyway. While there has indeed been excitement, there’s been much disappointment and indifference, too. Many who are satisfied with their Patronus still have further questions. For example, what does each Patronus mean? What do they say about us as people?

Whether or not we’ll get a concrete answer to that is unknown. But for those curious about the quiz’s format and all possible results, some good Samaritans have come to the rescue. Reddit users Alolakazam and ibid-11962 have cracked the case beautifully with their comprehensive looks at the quiz and all its outcomes. Alolakazam explains in detail how the quiz works, from structure to semantics. Meanwhile, ibid-11962 does likewise, and lists the Patronuses based on rarity: regular, unusual, and very rare. These fans collaborated with their information, and drew up a spreadsheet that shows others how each combination of answers leads to your particular Patronus.

First and foremost, wowza. These fans did their fellow Potterheads a major solid with this intel. Not only are we privy to every Patronus shape, but we can begin to deduce how we each cast the one we did.

For instance, I ended up with the black-and-white cat. According to the details the spreadsheet provides, the words I chose to achieve this endgame all seem to involve warmth, intelligence, and togetherness. These are all general themes I can relate to, and my Patronus makes more sense to me because of it. I was initially pleased with and confused by my cat, but now I get it. The clarification was needed and much appreciated. It’s not on the same level as the analyses that accompany our wand assignments, but it’s a good start.

Furthermore, the spreadsheet offers us a top-notch visual aid to compare the possible Patronuses. Creatures as different as an aardvark and the mythical Abraxan winged horse have remarkably similar results, up until the fourth and fifth question sets. So if you’re put-off by your aardvark, take comfort in the fact that it’s not so different from a magical beast, after all. On the whole, this band of Reddit users has offered us clarification and insight, with plenty left to ponder over. And judging by our vast array of fan theories and headcanons, pondering is one thing that Potter fans really do best.
