13. The Nightmare Before Christmas

This year the tickets for Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas at the Hollywood Bowl were sold out so quickly they had to add an extra night. Featuring the original cast including Danny Elfman, a live orchestra, and the film playing on screens around the venue, the event has been a huge Halloween success the past two years. But three performances a year just isn’t enough for this cult favorite.  A Broadway play matching the macabre style of the original would be a welcome addition for Halloween lovers and theatergoers alike.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was recently put on stage in another form at the Beverly Hills Playhouse. This adaptation had an almost uncanny resemblance to the stop motion film itself. Seeing as the video of the song, “Jack’s Lament” performed by Matthew Patrick Davis has reached over 2.3 million hits on YouTube, it proves there is more than a willing audience for the play version.

Just looking at the staging of this smaller play is enough to wonder what it would look like on Broadway. The world needs more dark and broody plays that aren’t just solely about teenage angst (looking at you, Spring Awakening). The Nightmare Before Christmas is already visually stunning, it would be a smart idea just to take the style of the film and adapt it for the stage. Disney’s plays are some of the best out there already, even the ones they just put on in the theme parks so they would definitely do it right. A live adaptation of this film would be not only easy, but profitable. What are you waiting for Disney, Christmas?
