3. Mulan

They’ve done it with Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and even Tarzan and The Lion King. It is time for Disney to bring Mulan to Broadway. Mulan is so many people’s favorite Disney film because she is not a princess or a damsel in distress, she is a warrior who fights for her country and her family. There are even two different live action projects in the works, one by Disney and one by Sony, which proves there is a huge market for this film.

The film already has an incredible soundtrack. Just imagine “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” with a full ensemble of dancers as they train to protect China. Or the quiet, but powerful “Reflection” being belted out center stage. Or the hilarious “A Girl Worth Fighting For” with ensemble actors representing the women of the soldiers (and Mulan’s) dreams. There is nothing better than seeing your favorite Disney film come to life and I am getting giddy just thinking about this one.

Another thing to imagine? A cast of entirely Asian actors. If the story is about a woman who saves all of China, what better way would there be to showcase talent that rarely has a chance to shine? Broadway is slowly becoming more diverse, but like the rest of the entertainment industry these things take time. Taking a beloved story and telling it the way it is meant to be told would be a groundbreaking move that would give more opportunities for non white actors, and more role models for all children to emulate.
