10 Binge-Worthy SciFi/Fantasy TV Shows You Need to Watch
Lucifer
(Fox)
Loosely based on The Sandman comics, Lucifer follows Lucifer as he takes a break from Hell to run a nightclub. I thought this show would be terrible. But as a Neil Gaiman fangirl, I had to see what they did with the material. It’s much better than I thought. Maybe it was the low expectations or because I have a thing for extra-biblical mythology. Maybe it’s Tom Ellis’ devilishly handsome smile.
Tom Ellis plays Lucifer, and is believable as a man(gel?) who can convince you to admit your darkest desires or just talk your panties off. He’s accompanied by his left-hand woman, Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt), a daughter of Lilith. She followed him out of hell, out of whatever passes for love and loyalty among demons. Together, they run the swankiest nightclub in L.A. She tends bar while he plays piano, sings, and seduces the clientele.
Meanwhile, the angel Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) is tasked with convincing Lucifer to return to hell and do his job. This is not going well. Amenadiel is getting angry. And the more time he spends on earth in human form, the worse it gets.
All is going well for the Morningstar until he meets a pretty police officer named Chloe. (The main issue with this show is that it’s another police procedural. Lucifer is helping Officer Pretty Lady solve crimes because he has feels. OK.) She is the only woman he’s ever met who won’t respond to his charms. And whenever he’s around her, he feels more human. Literally, like not immoral and imbued with angelic powers. He is instantly obsessed. Unattainable desires are kinda his thing. He has to get her to want him and understand why she doesn’t. But will the search for answers lead to his destruction?
