Hero for Hire
Luke, like Jessica, seems to have not necessarily embraced his status as a superhero. He is a man who doesn’t like to draw attention to himself, a man in the shadows who operates with his own code. This series will thrust Luke into the limelight at a time when it may be the most dangerous. Seeing Luke’s growth from unwilling hero to the protector of Harlem is something I would very much like the show to explore. Matt is a hero because he believes it is the right thing to do. Jessica does not consider herself a hero, but does what she does to protect the few people she cares about (aka Trish). What will be Luke’s reason for becoming the “hero for hire” we know him as in the comics?
Moving forward to the Defenders. knowing what drives Luke is also important. As much of a hero as Matt Murdock is, I believe it will be Luke’s involvement that convinces the others to join the cause. He’s a leader, he just hasn’t realized the power he has yet. It will be interesting to see Luke not only explore the origins of where he gets his powers, but also how he comes to use them and for what purpose.
