4. Magda and Jeremy’s Party

After her break up with Daniel, Bridget is forced to go to a friend’s party that is all couples and her. Though the scene is small, it’s Darcy’s reactions that make it worth while. Everyone is trying to ask Bridget about her love life and she smartly remarks about how one in three marriages end in divorce. When she forgets if it’s really three or four, it’s Mark who loudly exclaims “One in three” while continuing to eat.

It’s these little things that let the audience know just who Mark Darcy is. He’s been hurt and he’s jaded but he also is sweet and reserved to keep himself from getting hurt again.

Most of what is lovable about Darcy is his need to keep himself and Bridget safe. Yes, his means aren’t traditional, but he only looks out for the people he loves. This party was the first moment we had that showed a glimpse into the psyche of Mark. Before he seemed cold and detached but that little quip showed that he has a past he doesn’t like to talk about.

It’s these little instances where you can see who Darcy really is that makes him extremely lovable and that’s one reason why he’s our dream.
