12. Darcy Sleeping

A key thing in Bridget and Mark’s relationship in Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason is that she likes to watch him sleep. It’s typical of a romantic comedy but their situation is different. The first time it’s introduced, Mark responds with “Stop staring at me while I’m asleep and go find something to do”. When she doesn’t, he simply wakes up to talk to her.

It’s extremely cute and happens sporadically throughout their relationship, but it also shows that Mark would rather wake up and talk to Bridget than go back to sleep. It is part of his whole “don’t show emotions” attitude and it’s clear at this point in their relationship that he’s working on it.

The thing about Darcy is that he is continuously aware of the fact that his heart can be broken again (the main was married once and engaged and neither relationship panned out). And he knows that with Bridget, there’s a very high chance that she could hurt him terribly. But they know the other’s stories and work to make their relationship balanced and it all starts with this little moment.

He just wants to wake up with her and talk to her. Yes, he makes a snide comment about her watching him but that doesn’t make him stop her when she continues to do it.
