9. My Wife, My Heart

The truth is finally revealed to Bridget by her mother. She makes another snide remark about Mark and how he slept with Daniel’s fiancé. Her mother tells her that it was the reverse situation and that Daniel slept with Mark’s wife and Bridget realizes her mistake.

When she goes to talk to Mark, his only response to her apology is “My wife, my heart”. It’s this line that shows the sadder part of Darcy that only Bridget gets to see. He’s so closed off from everyone around him that it seems like he loathes everyone.  In reality he’s just protecting himself.

Mark is a very interesting character because even though he does open up to Bridget and smile and laugh more when she’s around, it doesn’t seem to correlate into the rest of his life. He still remains cold and distant from everyone else and it shows just how much Bridget truly means to him.

It’s why we all love him really. He only opens himself up to the girl he loves and he continually proves that he loves her through doing these outrageous things for her. In every film, Mark gives Bridget up to better her life by sacrificing himself. And in each film, it’s proven that they’re better off together than apart.
