Remember how I said pretty princess dresses are not really safe for women over the age of 18? Well, by 2013, Kerry Washington had already developed the reputation of a red carpet master, and the pressure was on. Especially since this was her first time being nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for Scandal. Washington was hedging that she might win (she didn’t, but nevermind.) The buzz was enough that it was better to dress like she would win, just in case.

There was one extra dimension to this dress, because there was one other secret Washington was dealing with: what to wear on the red carpet when you’re expecting. (No she wasn’t very far along, and it’s not at all obvious from the pic. But it wasn’t long after this that it became obvious.) Something big, something flowy and something that wouldn’t make it too-too obvious. Mission accomplished and top look of the night to boot.
