People don’t wear a lot of pattern to the Emmys, and Laura Dern’s dress here shows why: it’s risky and it might not come off on camera. Remember, one is usually cut by the cameras at different angles, what might look like a flower when shown in full might not look so much like a flower when the camera cuts it in half.
But the shimmy gowns with the see thru panels has been a big look this decade on the carpet, and Dern was determined to do one. One thing she did (just in case) was to have a white sheath underneath so that the dress does not look nearly as naked as if it was left on it’s own, with only those flowers covering the relevant parts. The effect though was to make the dress also feel more substantial and bring out the color better. One of my favorites.
