2015 Viola Davis in Carmen Marc Valvo
Ladies and gentleman, at number one: the reason Taraji P. Henson stood up and applauded.
Like Hendricks, Davis ain’t no size 2. She’s not young either, she’s worked decades in this industry and is only finally now getting the credit that she deserves. Her role in How to Get Away With Murder was straight up groundbreaking in how real it was willing to be about the life of a high powered African American woman. And much of that is due to Davis, who was not only willing to portray it, but sometimes had to insist on it.
To find a gown that would look this good on her, she had to go with a slightly offbeat designer, in this case Carmen Marc Valvo. She also did something that not many African American actresses are willing to do: she wore her hair natural. It was flawless. That she then took home the well deserved trophy? Double flawless. We can only hope that the Emmys continue this trend of being the conservative event that leads the way to a more progressive and fair awards world.
