Spend Some Time in Sarah’s Room

Having never seen Labyrinth in a movie theater, watching it on a big screen allows for an audience to take in details they’ve probably missed by watching on their television. Sarah’s bedroom is a great example of peppering the frame with items that return throughout the movie. There’s a dreamlike atmosphere of how objects are integrated within the narrative that’s akin to Peter Pan or The Wizard of Oz. Sarah’s music box plays “As the World Falls Down” that Bowie later sings during the ballroom scene, while Sarah’s dressed like the figure inside. You’ll also see toys that look like the Fiery’s in the room. Outside of that, I never noticed the giant sculpture on Sarah’s vanity that looks like concept art for Jareth.

There are also details contained in the room that were included in the A.C.H. Smith-written novelization. Images of a brunette woman are meant to represent Sarah’s mother who was a stage actress; hence Sarah’s interest in theatrics. Sarah’s mother is also pictured with a man who is obviously Bowie – who gets additional backstory in the novel. And because Sarah’s a big Broadway fan, keep an eye open for stage posters from Cats and Evita. Who’d have thunk Sarah was a Patti LuPone fan?
