Sarah’s Kind of the Worst

I’ve spoken to many independent-minded ladies who all agree Sarah is kind of terrible. Maybe she killed her little brother, but that’s neither here nor there. Sarah spends 85% of this movie whining about everything. I get it’s part of the movie – she eventually learns to grow up and realize life isn’t fair – but since this was one of Jennifer Connelly’s earlier roles, she hasn’t quite mastered the art of nuance. Some of Connelly’s line deliveries are extremely high-pitched that it’s amazing to see the fantastic actress she’s become.

After she enters the labyrinth itself she finds her way and though I’m all for feminism it’s hard not wishing she took Jareth up on his offer. Stay with me here: many of the ladies I know have mentioned Sarah’s turning away from Bowie as the reason they hate her. Maybe it’s because it’s David freaking Bowie, or the fact that he’s groveling for her. Either way, it’s fun to hear feminism go right out the window when we get to the final scenes.
