Mark Darcy
Fans of the Bridget Jones series and Colin Firth (which may be one in the same) will love him in this. Mark Darcy is the same stiff, intelligent, very British man who looks impeccable in a suit. As a barrister, he somehow manages to even look good in a wig. Particularly good in this film are his emotional reactions to events—or lack thereof. The strength of his emotions is conveyed in a weird way by their absence, and often by his sheer inability to be present. When Bridget first tells him she’s pregnant, he simply says, “Right.” Then, a couple minutes later, he excuses himself from the room. We never know what Darcy does in those moments, but we can imagine all sorts of things.
When he’s in the presence of other characters, his emotions are always kept in check. Even when he’s radiantly happy, he’s quiet about it. In another actor, this would be cold and off-putting, but in Firth, it’s so very appealing. His control feels solid and strong, a delightful contrast to Bridget’s emotional lability, and his dry wit is peppered with good humor. Despite his Britishness, Mark Darcy is also the type of guy who’d think nothing of breaking glass with his bare fist, which, stiff suit or not, makes him fundamentally bad-ass.
